No industry specific experience is necessary, but a background in project management/video production is desirable.

We’re HT, a specialist video, animation and photography agency. We work in the Health and Social Care, Energy and Sustainability, Engineering and Manufacturing and Training and Education sectors. Established in 2002 we have steadily built up a regular client base of companies from across the UK, for which we deliver story-driven content that reflects their brand and effectively tells their story. Our proactive, inquisitive approach ensures we discover the best solutions. We’re people-focused; building long-lasting relationships with our clients.

After a strong year of growth, we need the support of a reliable, upbeat and highly organised Producer/Project Manager to keep our projects moving, our creative team in the right place at the right time and most importantly, our clients happy. 

No industry specific experience is necessary. You may have previously been an account manager, project manager, a creative producer or worked in business development. Regardless of your experience we’re open to considering you for the role.

About the role of our Producer

• Day to day project management on multiple projects, such as mid to large video projects and leading a team where necessary. Project management experience working with animation is a plus but not a deal breaker.
• During projects we like to approach things as if we’re an extension of our client’s team. You will be one of their main points of contact and therefore integral in maintaining an effective relationship. You will be friendly and confident when liaising with clients- both in person and online- and will be someone they know they can come to and trust.
• Work closely with our creative and production teams to respond to and deliver on briefs.
• You will be coordinating the diaries of our team to make sure productions run smoothly and are delivered on time and on budget.
• You will be able to take and organise bookings over the phone or via email.
• You will monitor social media and at times be able to be proactive with this. You can create behind-the-scenes content and post social media updates that are relevant, enhance our profile, engage with our clients and display excellent grammar.

About you

You have an interest in visual communication 

You will be interested and willing to learn more about our clients and the sectors they work in.

You have good communication skills, are friendly and will work well as part of a diverse team. Working with a variety of people in a  wide range of sectors. You’ll know how to adapt your communication styles depending on the client we’re working with.

You’re proactive and a positive problem-solver. There might be stumbling blocks throughout the production process. This isn’t a problem as long as they’re responded to correctly.

Production skills would be beneficial but not necessary. We do occasionally need extra help on shoots from freelancers therefore if you have any video, photography, animation or editing experience this would be desirable but again not necessary.

We’ve recently started using Monday.com to help with project management. Experience of using Monday or similar tools would be useful.

International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women in our industry, as well as shine a spotlight on the issues women have faced, and still face today.

An honest look at women in the creative industry

Whilst research has shown that things are improving, the roles and opportunities for men and women are by no means equal. Women are still really struggling to break into the creative industry. Around 37.2% of the UK’s creative and design workforce is female, despite women accounting for approximately 60% of students enrolled in university arts and design courses.

There are several reasons as to why this might be the case, such as gender stereotypes, discrimination and bias. So, what can the industry do to change this?

Embracing Equality

To bring about meaningful change the industry must embrace equality; creating places where women can thrive.

Here are some ways this can be done:

– Track metrics and set goals- this can help companies understand what they do well, and areas for improvement.

– Hold leaders accountable- have leaders review metrics regularly and share them publicly to ensure the correct action is taken.

– De-bias hiring and promotion processes- set clear and specific evaluation criteria that cancels out any conscious or unconscious biases of the process or decision makers.

– Training- upskill managers and staff to gain a better understanding of the issues and how best to deal with them.

– Be flexible- embrace hybrid and remote working and/or be open to healthcare and caregiving needs.

– Call it out- if you witness discrimination or bias, then challenge it and draw attention to the issue.

These are only a few examples which could help to create a more equal working environment. It is important for companies and employers to assess themselves and see how they can best encourage the development of women in the industry.

Together is better

There are so many inspiring women in the creative industry, particularly here in the North East. However, it is important to remember that gender balance is not solely a women’s issue, but everyone has a part to play.

It’s fantastic to see that progress is being made, but there is still more to go. Collectively everyone everywhere can strive for women’s equality and continue to make positive gains.

TV talent from across the North East came together this weekend to celebrate the amazing and hard-working people of the region.

The night was filled with optimism and excitement as experienced and new talent merged. We reflected on the successes of the past year as well as looking forward at what’s to come for the North East.

From major studio development plans in Sunderland to the boom of comedy in the area, it’s clear that our region has a lot to give.

Here at HT, we even had our own reasons to be proud, as we were fortunate enough to be nominated for some awards of our own. Cal was short listed for the Rising star award which recognises the industry’s emerging talent, and Dave was short listed for the Professional Excellence Award for Post Production.

We are honoured to be considered amongst so many talented individuals and companies in our region. We work with incredible clients and love being part of their journey, telling their stories along the way.

It’s also important to recognise how we got here. Sadly we had to say goodbye to one of HT’s founders in October last year. Our colleague and friend Tony Cartledge was instrumental in all our development, something we will always be grateful for. It was heart-warming to see him remembered along with other local legends at this year’s ceremony.

Our Creative Director, Dan Monaghan said;

‘We had a great time at the RTS awards on Saturday. Cal was nominated by myself and Dave for the Rising Star award, an award that recognises those who are new to the industry but are destined to make a real impact.

Dave was nominated for the Professional Excellence in Post Production award. Although neither of them walk away with the trophy, both were shortlisted and made it into the final three.

I’m incredibly proud. It shows that our team is made up of talented individuals who are on par with the likes of large production houses in the region as well as big name broadcasters like the BBC and ITV.’  

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees of this year’s awards.

Striving for Net Zero: A Carbon Neutral Case Study

CASC had been working with OWGP to secure grant funding to enhance their manufacturing capabilities in the offshore wind sector. In addition to this they had completed the WEST Programme (just like us) to upskill their knowledge and approach within the industry.

A case study video is a fantastic way to spotlight their successful journey and tell CASC’s story. It can also serve as a powerful testimonial for OWGP’s work and how their support can help transform businesses.

Aiming for a carbon neutral production

Years of being a leading video production company for the renewable energy sector has opened our eyes for the need to transition to Net Zero. Last year we completed AdGreen training to equip ourselves with the knowledge and tools to offer carbon neutral productions and become a clean member of the UK supply chain.

This project offered us the perfect opportunity to implement our new skills.

During pre-production we took extra steps to ensure all the necessary actions were taken to reduce our environmental impact at every stage of the production.

We used the AdGreen carbon calculator to accurately measure our impact- looking at all aspects such as waste, materials and even the electricity used in the edit.

The biggest contributor to emissions during this project (and is usually the case for every production) is travel. We took steps to reduce our impact as much as possible- such as taking the ferry, which is a great carbon saver compared to flying- but ultimately we needed to be on-location for the purposes of filming.

But there is still something we can do.

Carbon offsetting

Once we calculate the unavoidable emissions produced by a project, we then compensate for it by investing in verified environmental projects like reforestation. 

Obviously, it is only a temporary solution, and we definitely cannot offset our way out of the climate crisis. But giving to verified, impactful environmental projects is a great way to support our journey to real Net Zero.

 The quality of the production is unaffected by our Net Zero efforts.

It’s Hydrogen Week so we’ve been reminiscing about our trip to Milford Haven in Wales to film the MH2 Energy Kingdom launch event.

Achieving net zero in the UK will require a huge transformation in the way we power our daily lives. Hydrogen is set to play a major role in that, helping us achieve a balanced energy mix along with offshore wind, solar and tidal energy.

The UK’s first Hydrogen Week aims to celebrate and explore hydrogen’s role in this change.

As part of the celebrations, we have been reminiscing about our trip to Milford Haven in Wales. We were invited by Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult to film the launch event of MH2 Energy Kingdom.

Our very own Dan Monaghan joined HT Media on an apprenticeship 10 years ago and is now one of the company’s Directors. For National Apprenticeship Week 2023, he has been reflecting on his experience and exploring how starting as an apprentice boosted his career.

Back in 2013 I joined HT as a Media Production Assistant on an apprenticeship. Looking back on it, an apprenticeship was a great way introduce me to the world of work. At the time I had turned down the opportunity to go to university and wasn’t sure what career path I wanted to follow.

Entering as an apprentice gave me the opportunity to experience the role first hand. It was useful for deciding whether or not this was the career for me and helped me develop useable skills, rather than just the theoretical knowledge I had previously learned at college.

Starting my apprenticeship

I remember starting at HT very vividly. After an interview and trial filming day, I was offered the job and was thrown straight into the action.

My first day was a gruelling 12hour shoot at a local NHS trust. The schedule hadn’t factored in any breaks or time to walk to the different locations throughout the hospital! It was a difficult introduction to working life, but it gave me confidence moving forward.

In my first year at HT, I had some great opportunities to work on projects with a variety of clients across the UK. Travelling was very exciting, and something I was keen to do- another advantage of an apprenticeship. I learnt a lot about how a business operates and the ins and outs of video production.

Although most importantly, I learnt a crucial skill that everyone should have in the workplace- how to make a great cup of tea.

Looking back

10 years have flown over. I’m no longer an 18-year-old, fresh faced and new to the world of work. Just as I have grown throughout the years, so has the company. I have been fortunate enough to be heavily involved in this growth, and to decide how the company moves forward.

We have positioned ourselves as a leading video production company for the offshore wind renewable energy sector. An industry which is both fascinating to be part of, and close to our hearts as it plays a vital role in achieving net zero in the UK, with the Northeast pioneering its development.

I am thankful for the opportunities my apprenticeship and HT gave me all those years ago, and would highly recommend others explore a similar path.

I would love to provide the same opportunity to another apprentice- hopefully soon!

People working in the creative industry are three times more likely to experience mental health issues. Time to Talk Day 2023 provides a great opportunity to reflect on our industry and own well-being.

Whilst physical health is often at the forefront of our minds, the idea of mental health is often neglected. This can be especially true in video production. A job that is often physically demanding, whether that’s working long hours or carrying and setting up heavy kit. However, the high intensity of this work can be just as mentally draining. Just like we sleep, eat and exercise well to ease the physical strain, it’s just as important to address any internal struggles as well.

What is mental health?

It’s something we all have. Our mental health is how we’re feeling emotionally and includes things such as thoughts and feelings.

It strongly affects our daily lives. Mental health can impact on how we perceive everything in our life, how it feels to us and our ability to do the things we need or want to. Our mental state is always changing depending on current circumstances and our ability to manage it. Although it’s important to realise this is completely normal.

When our mental health is good, we feel good. We might experience feelings of content, calm or hope. However, when it is not so good, we might feel life is more of a struggle. We could start feeling sad, exhausted, or hopeless.

Whether it’s in our personal or professional lives, it’s important to take notice.

Mental health in our industry

The creative industry, and in particular video production, can be an exciting, fun, and interesting place to work. Despite this, studies have found that creatives are three times more likely to suffer with poor mental health than the average population.

In fact, a ‘mental health emergency’ was declared for the film and TV industry in 2019, when research found 9 in 10 people working in the UK sector had experienced mental health issues- compared to 65% in the population as a whole. Unfortunately, a continuation of that research in 2022 found figures had only gotten worse.

The industry comes with no shortage of challenges such as burnout, job insecurity, low pay, and long hours away from friends/family. All of these have shown to have a negative impact on people’s mental wellbeing.

It’s Time to Talk

Whilst industry-wide changes might be needed to address issues directly, there is one key thing we can do to ease the strain on ourselves and those around us:

Talk about it.

A simple conversation can be the first big step to changing our perceptions and improving our mental wellbeing. It can help to shine a light on issues, initiating action to improve a situation or just take a weight off someone’s shoulders.

Talking doesn’t need to be complicated or awkward. It can be a quick chat over coffee, a call or text. Even just letting someone know you’re available and willing to talk can have a huge impact.

Reach out to at least one person today- it can make a world of difference.

Tony took over at HT Media 20 years ago, after a very successful career as a TV and radio journalist. Since then, he has been a mentor and friend to all of us that came afterwards. A fountain of knowledge, humour and professionalism, Tony will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.

About Tony

Tony began his career in 1968 at 19 years old working for the Daily Mail in Hull. Here he gained his first experiences in the world of journalism which set him up for his future endeavours. After this he enjoyed many years working in radio. Perhaps most notably being the voice of BBC Radio Newcastle’s breakfast programme, amongst other stations such as Metro Radio and LBC. Tony would often talk quite fondly of his time in the studio and made many memories there.

Alongside his radio work, he was a well- known figure on local TV. He worked as a reporter for the BBC on programmes like Look North, and produced numerous shows for Tyne Tees and Discovery. In 1995 came one of his most successful moments when he interviewed then Cabinet Minister Kenneth Clarke. Mr Clarke mixed up Consett Steelworks (which had closed in 1980) with Redcar during the discussion, and of course Tony seized the opportunity. It caused quite an uproar, winning Tony an RTS award, as well as a fiver from a colleague which was framed along with a newspaper article in his home office.

In 2002 he joined forces with long-time friend and colleague Charles Harrison to take over local production company HT Media. Tony continued to produce critically acclaimed TV shows- such as Emergency which aired between 2004-2007- and fronted his own interview show ‘The Sunday Interview’. Over time, Tony was instrumental in transforming the company, working with many large corporate clients. Twenty years later, the company has grown more than he ever imagined and has provided many opportunities and full time careers to local talent.

Dave Hindmarsh, Director of Post-Production; “My friend, colleague, and mentor, we have worked together closely for over 25 years. We became a great team and enjoyed each other’s company as we worked on hundreds of projects together. For a man with such talent and determination he was always self-deprecating and unbelievably modest.  And he was annoyingly always right. Nobody ever had a better sense of ‘finding the story’ than he did. Tony was truly an inspiration to me and a rock in hard times. I have always appreciated his humour, integrity, professionalism, and support. He will be deeply missed.”

Dan Monaghan, Creative Director; “Tony has had a huge impact on me over the last nine years, not just at work but in my personal life. He believed in me from very early on and offered me huge opportunities to progress. He was someone you could count on for an unbiased opinion and has given me some great advice over the years. One of the pieces that has stuck with me and became a bit of a mantra is “only worry about the things in life which you can control”. I think it’d be an understatement to say I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am today if I hadn’t have met Tony.”

Cal Graham, Creative Production Manager; “When I first joined the team as a university student, I was warned of Tony’s unique approach to things. His straight-forward, no nonsense approach could often be misinterpreted but to those who knew him, his brilliance was obvious. Tony was an incredible mentor and challenged me to be the best I could be. He was always so supportive of me in my academic, professional, and personal lives and I learned so much from him as a result.”

Tony’s favourite film was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and his favourite quote from the movie reflects him perfectly:

“Boy I got vision, and the rest of the world wears bifocals”.

We have all learned so much from Tony and would relish the opportunity to be on location or in the edit with him, but even more so in the pub. The inspiration and support he gave both professionally and personally will always be appreciated.

We miss you Tony. Our thoughts are with your wife Judy and son Nick.

Tony’s funeral service will be held at Whitley Bay Crematorium on Monday 24th October at 13:30, followed by a wake to celebrate his life at Whitley Bay Golf Club. Any former colleagues and clients are more than welcome to attend.

After a successful period of growth, we are delighted to welcome Lottie Kirton to the team as Production Assistant.

Having recently graduated from Northumbria University with a degree in film and tv, Lottie brings a wealth of knowledge and a new perspective to the team. She is equipped with the technical know-how thanks to previous experience, as well as creating multiple films during her university course.

Lottie said;

“I am delighted to be starting my new job as Production Assistant within HT Media. Joining the team at ht will allow me to learn new skills within video production, such as operating camera equipment by working alongside the team on different projects.

This new role will develop the skills I have learnt whilst studying Film and TV Production at Northumbria University, allowing me to strengthen my creativity.”

After less than a week, Lottie has demonstrated her skills on camera and in the edit. All of us here at HT are excited to see the continued growth of both our staff and the company during this exciting time.

“We’re currently going through a period of growth after having one of the best starts to the financial year since I’ve been at the company. Because of this we’ve been able to invest not only in a new team member, but also new kit for filming, editing and animating.

HT Media has completed the WEST Programme to improve upon industry knowledge and supply better video production for the offshore wind sector.

As a company, we pride ourselves on being experts in video content relating to renewable energy. As such we’re always looking for opportunities to collaborate with companies in the sector and improve upon our skill set. Working with both the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership (OWGP) and Opergy, we have completed the WEST Programme. This has increased our understanding of offshore wind, and therefore improved our capability to help companies achieve their goals through meaningful video content.

What is the WEST Programme?

The programme is delivered by OWGP. It aims to support companies grow in UK offshore wind by increasing their competitiveness. Through a series of workshops, they address the predetermined aims set by the participating company- making each session specific to them.

They collaborate with Opergy to provide these workshops. We worked with experts from the sector who were able to provide a clear picture of the industry, and our place within it.

Where are we now?

Through their support we feel more prepared than ever to assist our clients. Now we have the industry knowledge, as well as the experience to back it. 

Over the last five years we’ve worked with over 25 companies in the renewable energy sector. These include companies such as GE/LM Wind Power, ROVCO and Osprey, as well as being the lead video providers for the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult in the North East and Scotland. You can see some of these videos in the portfolio section of our website.

We’re also sea survival trained, meaning we have the capability to film offshore when required.

The combination of these factors means we’re prepared to make content that actually makes a difference. Whether that’s addressing company-specific/industry-wide issues, or helping companies shout about themselves to inspire the next generation.

An exciting future

All of us here at HT are very excited for what the future holds. We can’t wait to get stuck-in and see the offshore wind sector thrive- in the UK as a whole, and particularly the North East- during what is an exciting, and critical time.
