5 things to consider when choosing a video production company

If your business needs video production services it’s very difficult these days to find a company that performs to the level they should in order to call themselves professional. With high end technology encroaching further into our homes, what was a very costly and disciplined occupation now has quite affordable alternative technologies which are exceedingly user friendly. Although this does mean that more people are connected visually and it enriches the internet. It also means that a number of start-up companies, new media graduates and home based businesses think they can offer the same quality of video production as the archetypal professional. Without delving to deeply into semantics a good metaphor would be:

If you were to give a child and a veteran fine artist the same premium canvass, the same set of expensive brushes and the same pallet of oils and you asked them both to paint a portrait so that someone could see what you looked like. Which end result would be the most accurate, in keeping with the required aesthetics, and professional?

The answer to this is quite obvious!

It’s no different for a business using video, if you want someone to see what your business is like, or convey another message. You need someone who can understand your business, its objectives, it’s branding (the pallet) and who can turn all of that information into an accurate, aesthetically superior, audio visual representation using industry standard techniques and disciplines.

For that reason there are 5 questions you should ask yourself when choosing a video production company, they are:

1. Who do they work with?

It’s important to know what sort of background they have in the industry. Are their clients satisfied? If so, can they prove it, and can you see evidence of the work? It doesn’t matter to a certain extent how many people they have worked with, after all we all had to start somewhere, what matters are the types of jobs they claim to have done and is the quality of work consistent.

2. How well do they know their current clients?

Don’t be afraid to quiz production companies about their current clients. Ask about products and services and how they used their service to promote or explain a topic. Any video production company ‘worth their salt’ should be able to instantly answer such questions and know their clients ‘inside and out’ as well as having the ethical fibre and sense to refuse to answer questions that could be considered to be a conflict of interest or damaging.

3. Can you work with them?

If you can’t see yourself working with a company it’s pointless trying to no matter what their track record is. Whoever you speak to is a representative of that company and if they are anything other than courteous, knowledgeable, honest, understanding and helpful don’t use them. Equally if they don’t inspire you or lack the capacity to fully understand your branding, strategies, objectives or products and services they’re not right for you.

4. Are they the best economical option?

As a rule, you normally get what you pay for; though quite often some premium rate companies charge a fortune though lack the drive and inspiration of smaller companies. Conversely, as we’ve already discussed, cheap and cheerful can mean amateurish and flawed. You should always check how contactable they are and quiz them on their capacity before starting a project. Do some research into production rates and see what an average professional production should cost. A good video production company should be able to offer a full package to suit your budget (within reason) and explain what you get for the price quoted. It’s not uncommon for a production company to give you a range of options from a basic to a premium service.

5. Do they excite you?

Is what they propose unique and insightful? Can they apply industry standard techniques in a new and exciting way? Do you stop and think, “yes it should be done like that, I would never have thought of it in that way”. Are they motivated and do they motivate you and do they understand your business but can look at it in a different way? If the answers are yes then you’re on to a winner.
